It's Time to Say Thank You

Veterans Day. The day in the year where we thank those who came before us, are still with us and will be with us, who fought and will fight for our freedoms. In the ever-changing political environment we live in, I'm reminded that it's critical we say a simple "thank you."

You see, the phrase "thank you" goes a long way. This week in church, Pastor Troy shared some wise words of wisdom: It starts with being faithful in the little things. During his sermon, he was referencing the story we find in Acts 6, where Stephen, full of God's grace and power, was stoned to death because he was accused of speaking out against Moses and the Temple. He had reached thousands upon thousands of people, but religious leaders couldn't see that he was trying to do the right thing in sharing the Gospel.

Stephen was the first martyr. If we think about what that term means in today's society, it can be taken in many ways. If we think about those who have served our country, they were martyrs. They went above and beyond, answering the call of duty to serve, and took one challenge right after the other with positive stride. Some returned home to their families, others didn't. They gave the ultimate sacrifice: fighting for our freedoms.

As a graduate of BCLUW Middle School, I have fond memories of crowding in the gym on the afternoon of Veterans Day, playing in the band, singing in the choir, and listening to a roll call of the veterans who were present in the room and those who were serving overseas. What a time to celebrate - I still get goosebumps thinking about playing "The Star-Spangled Banner" on my trumpet while our veterans stood and saluted the flag. They have nothing but utter respect for this country and what it stands for. No matter the challenges facing this world, you will always find them showing their love towards this country in a proper salute.

In 1974, Johnny Cash wrote a song called "Ragged Old Flag." If you've never taken a moment to listen to it, I suggest you do so. The last line ends with the following phrases:

So we raise her up every morning

We take her down every night

We don't let her touch the ground and we fold her up right

On second thought, I do like to brag

'Cause I'm mighty proud of that ragged old flag.

We're proud of this country and the roots it has. But it wasn't ours just overnight. It took years of sacrifice, blood, and grit, to get to the point we are today. So, my friends, I believe a thank you is long overdue. My challenge to you today is to take a moment, say a quick prayer, and express a simple "thank you" to someone you know who has served this country. It will go a long way.
